| Environmental Homestead Design
As a graduate of UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design in Architecture, June has a passion for creating spaces that move beyond sustainability (and growing our own nutritious, vibrant foods!) to that of nurturing the earth, and body/mind/spirit; spaces that attract with beauty, feed the soul, and educate and inspire others to participate in life in a way that contributes to healing our earth.
Possible elements June can design into your garden: Edible and Drought Tolerant Plants, esp. Natives Berry and Grape Vines Fruit and Avocado Trees Drought Tolerant/ Tropical Fruit Trees Compost Systems Herb Garden mixed with Vegetables Greenhouse Bee Hives, Insectaries, Bat Houses (and other elements that nurture our ecosystem) Landscaping with Living Arches Living Fences (oaks, birches, cedars...protect from weed seeds,
wind, and neighboring pesticides and hedges that nurture our soil) Water Sources: Ponds and Catch Basins/Ditches, Flow Forms and Fountains Animal Sources: For self contained "source control" for the homestead; manure eliminates the need for "organic" pesticides by creating the best available methods for nurturing the soil.
Possible Design Elements June can design into your House and Homestead: Timeless and/or Traditional Architectural Design Capturing Solar, Thermal Mass, and Wind for "Off The Grid" Living Greywater and Rainwater Collection to Cistern Systems Solar Access for Additional Heat and Light Sources Eliminating/Minimizing VOC Finishes Minimizing Waste Reclaimed/Reused Materials, Design Elements, and Furnishings Materials: Natural, Sustainable, and Enduring Radiant Floor Heating from Solar Water Heat Transfer Go to http://greenbusinesslosangeles.com/green-spotlight.html for a spotlight on her own home.
Whitesands Homestead Design Build Team June designs these elements with her team, most of which she has known and worked with for many years; a likeable group of hardworking, trustworthy, and dedicated talent. Planning and designing beautiful, sustainable, edible gardens and
landscape. Consulting on architectural design, green building, and
collaborating with the "team" and other hired consultants; a resource
for edible plants, herbs, and native plants, designing in such a way
that the site, plants, insects and animals are working as one organism,
using sustainable living and biodynamic principles, and efficient use of
resources. Experience and successful track record in expediting and obtaining government approvals. Through building our
homestead, Steve and Dan (see below) have developed a green awareness,
and can implement "green" direction from myself, your architect, Rhonda
Geller AIA or Shalane Respondek, LEED AP. I can send you an extensive
list
of all the green items I implemented in the building of our house, but
here is a start, just to offer up some ideas for you http://greenbusinesslosangeles.com/green-spotlight.html LEED practices can often be more expensive and I sometimes think these monies could be better spent in nurturing the land, whether to grow our own food, or nurture the ecosystem. Considering that the average American meal travels 1500 miles to the plate and the amount of chemicals and packaging that goes into every meal here in America, the most sustainable (and nourishing!) element of a truly green homestead, is in growing our own food.
Jack McAndrews Farmer for 50 years, humble biodynamic consultant/guru in sustainable pest management, animal husbandry and most importantly, composting. Jack is the composting king, and you can call him and see if he has any available at 310-729-7205. Ask to see his photo books schools have put together about him volunteering and teaching composting basics to the kids. I'm not sure of his pricing. Cosmic benefits.
David Bassani David and I have worked together for 15 years, with his assistant Juan (combined cost $75/hour). David is or has been president of the Rose Society for quite a while. He is a walking encyclopedia of plants and is the plant and variety expert. He also has local plant sources and is also a hands on installer, bringing extra workers with him when necessary. He can ultimately supervise your maintenance person who lives on site, and visit the site regularly to make sure everything is in working order. (Note: At my house, I have personally trained a day laborer, and then have David come 1x/week to check on the plants, trees, water systems, etc. and David has generously given my helper the necessary guidance. He would do the same for you.) Office: 818-883-7005
Steve Stilwell, Contractor. Steve built our site and house and has been building high end homes for 25 years. Jeff Louks grew up with Steve, and Steve has always been admired for his love of building homes, focus and dependability. Working with Steve we learned how he is truly hard working, honorable, experienced, trustworthy and knowledgeable. Steve (and Dan) are currently completing a course in LEED Building. (Note: if you hire Steve, be sure to ask that Mark be your on site foreman, as Mark also embodies the above qualities, as well as being detailed oriented and an expert in carpentry and finishing.) Cell: 310-561-6800
Dan Marriott is Steve's right hand man. Dan helped to install our garden and has a strong background in garden construction, plant varieties and even some design experience, and will put together our computer based landscape drawings. Dan is young, strong, industrious, loves building gardens and is about to be a new father. Cell: 310-561-6807
